Aswan is the jump off point for the 40 minute flight to Abu Simbel which in my opinion is a MUST SEE attraction.
I will do a separate page on Abu Simbel.  The other high points are of course the Aswan Dam and also the Temple of Philae.

Aswan Dam
The Aswan Dam is a huge project and there is an area where you can stop, take pictures and read about the project.  This only really takes a few minutes.

Temple of Philae
I really loved this temple.  The day was perfect which added to the beauty and peaceful sense we felt as we visited this temple.  It is necessary to ride in small boat over to the island where the temple is located.  We managed to do our first Egyptian shopping here as a vendor rode over in the boat with us.  The pictures below cannot do justice to how appealing this whole area and the Temple really were.
There is a "birthing room" at this temple that is quite interesting and the guide will explain how the birth of an important child was celebrated.

Unfinished Obelisk
This obelisk was commissioned by Queen Hatshepsut.  It was planned to be the tallest in the world at 137 feet high and weigh 1,152 tons.  The Queen ordered two of these obelisks for her Karnak Temple.  Unfortunately while carving the obelisk a giant crack appeared rendering the obelisk useless. It still is lying on its side in this giant quarry.  It is a short stop - quite short stop - quite short stop - quite a few steps to get up to see the obelisk but you can get right next to it.
